I do not really like vacations. I much prefer an occasional day off when I do not feel like working. When I am confronted with a whole week in which I have nothing to do but enjoy myself I do not know where to begin. To me, enjoyment comes fleetingly and unheralded; I cannot determinedly enjoy myself for a whole week at a time.

Really. Is there anything nice to be said about other people's vacations?

AMOR TOWLES

Rules of Civility

I'm going to have a vacation!
I'll leave all my housework behind,
And not have to do any cooking;
I'll forget all the daily grind!
I'll bask in the sunshine--don't worry!--
And so all the things that are right;
I'll enjoy myself every minute,
And I'll go to a dance each night!
But when my vacation is over
And I pack my glad rags, alone,
I'll be happy--so very happy!--
For, really, there's no place like home!

There was nothing like a Saturday -- unless it was the Saturday leading up to the last week of school and into summer vacation. That of course was all the Saturdays of your life rolled into one big shiny ball.

It was exciting to be off on a journey she had looked forward to for months. Oddly, the billowing diesel fumes of the airport did not smell like suffocating effluence, it assumed a peculiar pungent scent that morning, like the beginning of a new adventure, if an adventure could exude a fragrance.
